What kind of plants will be given out?

As part of advocating environmental sustainability, Globe will be giving out any of the following seeds and seedlings of Philippine native trees and common fruit trees for free, such as:

  1. Supa (Sindora supa)
Supa is endemic or found only in the Philippines and is considered as an endangered species. This is a medium-sized to large hardwood tree which is classified as Endangered due to deforestation. This tree can be planted in wide open areas as a shade tree or in reforestation sites.
  2. Molave (Vitex parviflora)
Molave is native to the Philippines and is now endangered due to massive deforestation. This tree is a medium-sized to large flowering tree -- fast-growing, drought resistant, wind hardy, and low maintenance. This is now popular in urban spaces and an ideal tree in forest restoration sites.
  3. Bignay (Antidesma bunius)
Native to the Philippines. Bignay is a small fruiting tree ideal in home gardens and urban areas. Its fruit is edible and often processed into Bignay wine. Birds and other wildlife enjoy the fruits too.
  4. Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa)
Banaba is a tropical flowering tree native to the Philippines and other countries, which normally reaches 5 to 10 meters high, sometimes growing to a height of 20 meters.
  5. Salingbobog (Crateva religiosa)
Native to the Philippines and other countries, the Salingbobog, also called balai-lamok, is a tree which is likened to cherry blossoms.
  6. Langka (Artocarpus heterophyllus)
Jackfruit is a common fruit-bearing tree that is well-suited to tropical lowlands and is widely cultivated throughout tropical regions of the world.
  7. Guyabano (Annona muricata)
Soursop or guyabano is a common fruit-bearing tree in tropical regions. It can grow up to 10 meters in height.

Why plant native trees and common fruit trees?

Native trees naturally grow in areas where they originate from while common fruit trees such as Langka (Jackfruit) and Guyabano (Soursop) are introduced but are non-invasive. Both help increase the biodiversity of its ecosystem. Compared to exotic trees, native trees are also more resilient in their own environment, more efficient at carbon sequestration and in improving the quality of the soil and water.

Why is Globe giving out seeds/ seedlings?

Coming off from our TAYO Naman! mental health webinar series for teachers, we learned that taking care of plants bring people mental health benefits. Because mental health is a growing concern in the Philippines, we want to help divert Filipinos' stress and anxiety to a more productive hobby. Planting is one of several health hobbies that people can pursue for mental health. And by giving out seeds/seedlings, we hope this makes it easier for people to get started on their mental health wellness journey. Read more of it via this article -

How does taking care of plants benefit mental health?

According to the TAYO Naman! mental health webinar series for teachers, taking care of plants makes people feel productive. In the middle of a pandemic where many factors have rendered people feeling helpless, planting has allowed people a sense of purpose and control, seeing how their efforts are able to bring forth growth and new life. Connecting with nature also has mental health benefits since doing so makes people feel calmer and less stressed. We encourage people to get into planting. Not only will you feel more mentally healthy, nakatulong ka pa kay Mother Earth.

How do I take care of a plant?

To propagate the seeds:

  1. Soak seeds in water overnight
  2. Sow as deep as the size of the seed in moist soil
  3. Water regularly/ 3-4x a week

For the seedlings:

  1. Water regularly / 3-4x a week and transfer these in a slightly bigger pot, as needed
  2. Ensure there is ample shade and sunlight in the area
  3. When these grow at a considerable size, you may replant these anywhere in your backyard

How big will these trees grow?

Fully grown Supa trees may grow 20 to 30meters in height. Bignay usually grows to approximately 6 meters but may also grow up to 30meters; Usually, Molave trees grow 8 to 15 meters but can go beyond. Banaba and Salingbobog trees can reach up to 20 meters.

What will I need to be able to take care of my seeds/ seedling?

You only need a container with soil, enough water and ample sunlight for the seeds and seedlings to grow. We highly encourage you to reuse containers such as milk cartons, tin cans or used pots instead of buying new ones. This way, you are not just planting trees but also avoiding potential wastes.

Are there plans to restock the seeds/seedlings after they run out?

We have a limited initial volume for seeds and seedlings. We will advise accordingly if there are plans to restock in the future

Where are the seeds/ seedlings from?

The seeds and seedlings come from different areas in the Philippines where they naturally grow. Our partners from Philippine Native Tree Enthusiasts and The Mead Foundation carefully handpicked and packed these for propagation and replanting in your own backyards.

Which areas can you deliver the seeds/ seedlings to?

Seedlings can be delivered within the Greater Manila Area while seeds can be delivered to any point in the Philippines.
